Talk of a potential matchup between Caroline Dubois and Alycia Baumgardner continues to rumble, as both have spoken out recently.
Dubois beat Terri Harper by unanimous decision in London on 5 April, while Baumgardner came through some mild storms against the game Bo Mi Re Shin to win a wide unanimous decision on 17 April.
Still a way to go for the much-anticipated Dubois vs. Baumgardner fight
The two have gone back and forth on social media, and all paths lead to a collision, but maybe not quite yet. Dubois wants Baumgardner next; that is plain to see.
Meanwhile, Baumgardner is touting a super fight with Amanda Serrano or Katie Taylor, but it is hard to see either proposal coming to fruition.
Taylor is planning one final furor at Croke Park in Dublin to wave goodbye to her adoring fans, so seeing a high-level operator like Baumgardner in the opposite corner for her farewell would be a surprise.
Serrano is under the same promotional banner as Baumgardner at Jake Paul’s MVP, but you wonder if she is ready to hand over the face of the MVP mantle just yet.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs) was quick to dismiss Dubois as a challenge following her performance against Harper.
‘I had high expectations for her. I thought she would get Harper out of there, like I did, but she underperformed. I see a lot of flaws in her style; she is young.
‘We have to remember that she is 25 years old, she is hungry. I was there once. I know the fire that burns and her desire to want to be the best and fight the best, but you are not ready.’
On the other side, Dubois (13-0-1, 5 KOs) has made it clear what fight she wants, but does not foresee it happening next.
‘If she comes and fights me, that is the end of Alycia Baumgardner, she knows that.’
Dubois told Helwani.
‘Her whole image is built on being this bad girl inside and outside of the ring. If I go in there and smash up her face and bash her up, which I know I will do, then everything is completely eradicated and then the Alycia Baumgardner train comes to a smashing halt.’
Dubois eyes IBF titleholder if Baumgardner fight falls through
Dubois’ plan, if the Baumgardner fight does not materialize, is to stay active and try to win another version of the lightweight title by fighting the rough and tough IBF champion Elif Turhan, who has 8 knockouts in 13 wins.
‘I will go and collect another belt. I will be involved in the most dangerous fights that I can possibly be in. I want to be that girl. I am that girl and I will continue to prove why I am who I say I am.
‘I will take on the biggest, the most scariest, the most dangerous opposition I can possibly find and that is, right now, probably going to be Elif Turhan.’
As much as we would like to see Dubois take on Baumgardner, I don’t think anyone would be upset with a Turhan matchup.
Turhan can look crude at times, but is effective. Dubois is the more classical boxer with a great jab, speed, and athleticism, so it would make for an entertaining night.
We now wait to see if this materialises to give Caroline the activity she wants and a chance to add another belt to the collection.
