Fabio Wardley triggers Daniel Dubois rematch after brutal first defeat

The Dubois-Wardley rematch is further proof that Great Britain remains the beating heart of heavyweight boxing.

Fabio Wardley has decided to throw himself back into the fire in his next fight.

The 31-year-old is just one week removed from the first defeat of his professional career at the hands of Daniel Dubois. Their colossal heavyweight clash saw Wardley lose his WBO title in its first defence to the Londoner, who conquered the Ipswich man with a powerful mix of piston jabs and heavy hands.

Despite knocking Dubois (23-3, 22 KOs) down twice in the opening quarter of the fight, Wardley was second best for long stretches and, after absorbing wave upon wave of punishment, referee Howard Foster intervened to stop the contest in the 11th round.

Promoter Frank Warren sheepishly revealed afterward in a post-fight interview with Ade Oladipo on DAZN that a rematch clause was in place. Today (May 15), Wardley officially activated his opportunity for revenge.

In a post on X, Queensberry Promotions confirmed the news.

From favourite to underdog

Wardley, who went in as favourite to retain his title on May 9 in Manchester, will head into his 23rd professional fight as a sizeable underdog given the dominance displayed by Dubois. ‘Dynamite’ Daniel not only secured victory but inflicted significant damage on Wardley’s face. Yet, despite the knockout specialist’s best efforts, he could not put the former champion on the canvas.

The 31-year-old’s chin received its ultimate test, and his defensive limitations will be a major concern heading into the rematch. However, the former white-collar boxer remains one of Britain’s most exciting heavyweights and, against Frazer Clarke, Justis Huni, and Joseph Parker, his whiskers have repeatedly stood up to heavy artillery.

Wardley (20-1-1, 19 KOs) must now rest and recover following one of British boxing’s most brutal world title fights in recent memory. Significant tactical and defensive improvements will be required for him to overcome Dubois and reclaim his belt.

Dubois, now a two-time heavyweight champion, is basking in the enormous credit earned after his 23rd professional victory, which also served as the perfect tonic following his disappointing performance last year against Oleksandr Usyk, who holds two victories over the Londoner.

With Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua still a possibility for 2026, and the return of Moses Itauma scheduled for August, the Dubois-Wardley rematch is further proof that Great Britain remains the beating heart of heavyweight boxing.
