Norwich’s Emma Dolan saw her hopes of becoming IBF super flyweight world champion end in brutal fashion at the Olympia in Kensington on Easter Sunday, on the undercard of Caroline Dubois vs Terri Harper.
In the opening bout of Sky Sports’ return to boxing, Dolan was given a harsh introduction to world level by Mexico’s reigning champion Irma Garcia, who imposed herself from the opening bell.
Dolan (8-1, 1 KO) was dropped twice in the second round, both times by heavy left hands she never quite recovered from. The first knockdown came after a looping overhand left that caused a delayed reaction. On rising, Garcia walked her down and landed another clean left that sent her back to the canvas.
The third round brought more punishment. Garcia (26-5-1, 6 KOs), a seasoned southpaw, continued to find Dolan with the same shot. A sweeping left hand sent the challenger down again. She bounced off the bottom rope, dragging herself up once more, but the end was nigh.
Another left hand forced Dolan back to the ropes, and trainer Carl Greaves stepped in with 38 seconds remaining in the round, throwing in the towel to protect his fighter from further damage.
Up to this point, Dolan’s standout win had been her split decision victory over Matchroom’s Shannon Ryan in June 2024, where she retained the Commonwealth title and added the British. That night showed her grit and ambition. This one showed the gap she still has to close at world level.
This defeat will sting, but this was only her ninth professional fight, and at 27, there is more than enough time to rebuild.
The real question now is how she responds, and how far she can climb once the dust settles.
