No mercy in UFC…
Jiri Prochazka’s knockout loss at UFC 327 was one of the most gut-wrenching finishes in UFC history. The Czech marauder clawed defeat from the jaws of victory, lulling himself into a flush left hook from one-legged kickboxer Carlos Ulberg to end the fight in round one.
Pride killed the samurai and created one of the biggest blunders in MMA history. But with that said, it wasn’t entirely unpredictable.
Jiri Prochazka’s ‘mercy’ cost him the fight of a lifetime
If Prochazka fails to recoup, this loss will be a permanent stain on his record. After all, all he had to do was stall his target to secure a guaranteed injury TKO win; his self-admitted “Mercy” paid the highest price.
“F***, it happened,” Prochazka said in his post-fight interview. “I felt like mercy, in that fight I felt so sorry for him. This is one of the biggest lessons in my life. That fight was won. I had it. It was in my hand and I just let him because I saw his injury and f***.”
Ulberg’s big left hook and one-shot power were the biggest talking points of UFC 327’s main event predictions. It was known that ‘Black Jag’ carried massive power, could hit off the back foot, and had great timing with his check hook. Four previous opponents had fallen to this lethal technique, and fans thought Prochazka would know better than to underestimate it.
Despite this knowledge, ‘BJP’ saw his compromised opponent and decided, against his better judgment, to lay off the offense and call for a brawl — a decision that will keep him up at night for time to come. Ulberg added salt to the wound with his candid opinion on Prochazka’s ‘mercy.’
“I feel like he made a mistake there because I would not have done the same,” Ulberg remarked at the post-fight press-conference. “If you’re in there to get that title, you’d do whatever it takes to get that win.”
UFC 327’s conclusion is the worst outcome
Despite the flashy knockout and newly minted champion, this result spells disaster for the state of the light heavyweight division. Fans now have to contend with their champion being injured and possibly out of the fight scene for months.
At 35, Ulberg is no spring chicken, and knee tears can take a long time to treat and recover from. No doubt UFC will create an interim title fight down the line, but who’s going to fight for it? There isn’t a single engaging name on the light heavyweight roster right now.

- Jiri Prochazka just lost his fourth shot at the belt.
- Khalil Rountree Jr. was just knocked out by Prochazka.
- Jan Blachowicz hasn’t won a fight since 2022.
- Azamat Murzakanov was just finished by Paulo Costa at UFC 327.
Are we really looking at a potential Paulo Costa vs. Magomed Ankalaev or Jiri Prochazka interim title fight later this year? Light heavyweight is in a dire state, but one thing we can count on, however, is an injection of talent.
Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is making his move to 205 this Summer, and names like Abdul Rakhman Yakhyaev are making a steady rise to the rankings. If anything, this is an opportune time for active and ready light heavyweights to make a statement and climb the roster for an interim opportunity.
